Wood Shingles

A Natural Beauty — Wood Shingle Roofing

Wood shingle siding has made a come back over the past couple of decades. That’s probably due to its beautiful character and ability to last for up to 100 years. Shingles really do add charm to any building, whether its a shed, house or country cottage. They’re fairly easy to install and if you use a wood such as cedar or redwood, they’re naturally resistant to rot, insect and weather damage.

Shingles are basically small rectangles of wood that are attached one by one, from the bottom working upwards. Each row, or course, overlaps the one below it. Shingles are usually uniform in size, machine cut to give a smooth, regular finish.

Shakes are a type of shingle that are commonly made from cedar wood. Often they are hand split, giving a much more rustic finish with different sized, irregular pieces.

The most common woods used to make shingles are cedar, redwood and treated pine. You can also buy engineered wood shingle products, which are extremely durable and not susceptible to rot, curling or decay.

The reality of using wood shingles
There are a number of clear advantages of using shingle siding. The most obvious is the beautiful character it gives to your home.

If you’re using a wood such as red cedar then you also get the natural resistance to decay, the weather, insects and rot. They’re also very tough, so a stray baseball wont dent or mark them.

Metal Roofing

Why Choose Metal Roofing?

Valuable Investment

While the initial cost for a premium metal roof is higher than most other roofing materials, you’ll save money in the long run. A metal roof can last a lifetime. Asphalt shingles require replacement every 20 to 30 years. A metal roof can also increase the resale value of your home.

Beautiful Variety

No matter what kind of roofing style, color or finish you have now, theres a metal roofing style to match. Todays metal roofing looks just like common roofing material such as asphalt shingle, clay tile, cedar shake or slate. However, metal roofs last at least 2 to 3 times longer.

Strong & Durable

Non-metal roofing material begins to deteriorate as soon as its exposed to elements such as the UV rays of the sun, temperature changes, severe storms, and high winds. A metal roof will never deteriorate, and can withstand most everything Mother Nature throws its way.

Energy Efficient

Metal roofing in light colors reflects heat effectively to reduce cooling loads in the summer and insulates homes during the winter. That can help to lower energy bills.

Long Warranties

Most metal roofing comes with a true 30 to 50 year manufacturer warranty, plus a workmanship warranty from the installer. Talk to Regal Roofing  now to learn more about the metal roofing warranties that are available.

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt Shingles

Asphalt shingles are the most commonly used roofing material mainly because they are economical and versatile, work well on steep-sloped roofs, are sunlight and weather resistant, require little-to-no maintenance and are reasonably priced. In addition, asphalt shingles are also easy to cut, fasten, and fit, as well as being compatible with many different kinds of flashing and edging products. Furthermore, they don’t require specialized accessories for roof edges, wall terminations, and chimney or vent flashing’s.

These shingles are typically reinforced by organic or fiberglass material. Fiberglass shingles use fiberglass reinforcing mat, while the organic kind use a cellulose-fiber mat derived from wood. Fiberglass roofing shingles are more popular because they are more fire resistant, tear resistant, last longer, and are the most budget-friendly. They are also thinner, lighter, and easier to lug around.

Asphalt shingles now come in all kinds of colors and profiles, and to enhance the aesthetic pleasure of asphalt roofing shingles they may be coated with special laminate to provide an eye pleasing texture. They also can come equipped with zinc plating to protect against algae build up. Keep in mind, any and all additional features will increase the pricing of your roof, but asphalt shingles are still going to be the most affordable roofing option.

Asphalt Shingle Roofing Drawbacks
The main drawback to asphalt shingles is related to the service life. Asphalt roofing shingles are available in grades with an expected life of 20-50 years depending on the price. However, durability issues and wear-out or material failures occur earlier than expected in some situations. Also, shingles used in warmer climates will have a lower life expectancy, but these types of shingles generally come with 20+ year warranty. Keep in mind, however, that warranties are a marketing device and are not a reliable predictor of life span. To be on the safe side, it is wise to demand shingles that meet industry manufacturing standards.

Asphalt shingles are a great choice for a roofing material if you are looking for a fairly standard roof, with low maintenance, a great price, and a reasonable service life. They typically cost anywhere from $80 to $225 or more per square. Keep in mind that tearing off the existing shingles will add another $100 to $200 per square.
